Metrohm: ASTM D7359 – 14a : Total Fluorine, Chlorine and Sulfur in Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Combustion IC

Combustion IC combines pyrohydrolytic sample combustion and absorption of the evolving combustion gases in an oxidizing aqueous solution that is then fed into an ion chromatograph for analysis of halides and sulfur (as sulfate). The combustion and analysis of certified reference materials (CRMs) proves the reliability of the Metrohm Combustion IC.

ASTM D7359 – 14a : Total Fluorine, Chlorine and Sulfur in Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Oxidative Pyrohydrolytic Combustion and IC Detection (CIC)

Significance and use according to ASTM D7359 – 14a

The total fluorine, chlorine and sulfur contained in aromatic hydrocarbon matrices can contribute to emissions, be harmful to many catalytic chemical processes, and lead to corrosion. This test method can be used to determine total sulfur and halogens in aromatic hydrocarbons and their mixtures. The results can be used for compliance determinations when acceptable to a regulatory authority using performance based criteria.

The principle – CIC – Combustion Ion Chromatography

In CIC the samples are first digested under an argon atmosphere in the oven unit and then burnt with oxygen. In the 920 Absorber Module, the resulting gaseous compounds are passed into an absorption solution, which is then transferred inline to a Metrohm ion chromatography system, where it is analysed.
