Digestion, Synthesis and Extraction – Three Microwaves in One

Digestion, Synthesis and Extraction – Three Microwaves in One

The flexibility of Milestone’s proven platform of microwave technologies provides unique advantages to teaching and research laboratories.

The base system which is typically used for microwave digestion may be modified to allow its use in microwave-assisted chemical synthesis (ie. organic chemistry) as well as sample preparation for organic analysis (ie. extraction of organics before GC-MS or LC-MS analyses).

Flexible microwave platform

The flexibility of Milestone’s proven platform of microwave technologies provides unique advantages to learning and research laboratories. The ETHOS system may be used for microwave digestion in order to prepare samples for inorganic analyses. A slight modification allows the use of the same system for microwave-assisted synthesis for organic chemists, the use of pressurised vessels allows higher temperatures and therefore faster reaction rates. The same system may also be used for solvent extraction of organics such for analysis of eg. pesticides in soil or fat in dairy products.

ETHOS – digest a range of samples before trace elemental analysis

The ETHOS
The ETHOS platform, pictured above with a rotor for microwave digestion is typically used for digesting a range of samples before trace elemental analysis (e.g. ICP-OES or ICP-MS).

The high-pressure rotor shown (SK-15) can handle up to 100 bar of pressure per vessel which raises the boiling point of the acid mixture used thereby allowing much higher temperatures and therefore faster reaction kinetics. The result is a high-quality digestion with very low residual carbon which provides the lowest interferences in the subsequent analyses.

ETHOS X – extract organic compounds from various matrices

The ETHOS X

The ETHOS X (pictured above) is a microwave-assisted extraction system which allows organic compounds to be extracted from various matrices such as soil, plants, food etc. for subsequent analysis by either GC-MS or LC-MS. These types of extractions can be performed using the fastEX-24 rotor as pictured above. The pressurised vessels allow the temperature of the organic solvents to exceed their nominal boiling point at atmospheric pressure, thereby requiring much shorted extraction times. The fastEX-24 may also be used in the ETHOS system described above by adding a single temperature sensor.

flexiWAVE – perform chemical syntheses under pressure

The flexiWAVE

The flexiWAVE (pictured above) is a microwave-assisted synthesis system which allows chemical syntheses to be performed under pressure, thereby allowing the temperature of the organic solvents to exceed their nominal boiling point at atmospheric pressure and achieving much shorted reaction times. The SK-15S rotor shown above may also be used in the ETHOS system described above with no modification or a fiber optic temperature probe can be added for the most accurate temperature control.

The diverse and ever-changing range of applications found in today’s teaching and research laboratories benefits financially from only needing a single system for several applications while dramatically saving bench space which is always in short supply.
