Phosphate in Cola Drinks

Metrohm Process at-line analyser layout for phosphate analysis

Phosphoric acid (phosphate) concentration

When producing cola drinks it is important to follow the phosphoric acid (phosphate) concentration.

Metrohm Process Analytics has various systems to monitor the phosphate concentration as at-line or on-line:

At-Line

The at-line analyser system analyses phosphate concentration directly from the filled cans or bottles.

Using the at-line system is very easy:

Insert a bottle or a can into the loading station and press start. The analyser will dilute the sample automatically to the desired measurement range and then measure the phosphate content. The whole analysis takes around 10 minutes. After the analysis the result is shown on the display. The data can optionally be sent into DCS/SCADA or data management systems automatically.

The at-line system can be equipment with an alarm beacon, which will flash and optionally sound when the product is out of the specifications.

On-Line

The analyser can be connected directly to the process pipe when more frequent analyses are required. The on-line analyser will take samples from the process automatically in batches every 10 minutes and perform the measurements. After each analysis the results can be sent to the data management system.

The on-line system can also be equipment with a flashing alarm beacon,  and optionally sound an alarm when the measurements are out of specifications.

At-line or On-line systems features:

  • Automatic cleaning programs
  • Automatic soft drink dilution to the desired measurement range
  • No need for degassing samples
  • No sample preparation
  • Minimal manual work to run the system successfully (approx. 5 to 30 minutes per week)
  • Used analysis method is industry proven so called “molybdenum blue” method
