Vanadium speciation in Benfield solutions

Vanadium speciation in Benfield solutions

Benfield Solutions containing V(IV) and V(V).

The vanadium species play an important role in many industrial and environmental processes. Vanadium and its compounds are used extensively in the steel and petrochemical industries for the removal of sulphur and CO2 from process streams in the production of petrol and gas.

The separation of the Vanadium species in their respective EDTA complexes was performed on the short 50 mm Metrosep ASUPP5 column using an EDTA -trisodium salt as a mobile phase. The Vanadium – EDTA complexes were detected in direct UV at 282 nm.

To prevent the oxidation of V(IV) species, prior to the analysis, the same chelating ligand EDTA was chosen to complex it to form the V(IV)-EDTA anion complex,[VO(EDTA)]2-. This complex has been well characterised, and it is very stable with a stability constant of, logK =18.77.
